May 6, 2008 - At our meeting today we distributed checks from the "Score a Goal Against Hunger" project cash donations to Sister Ann Marie Cauley of the Saint Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen, Major Bea Connell of the Scranton Corps, Captain Patty Richwine of the Wilkes-Barre Corps and our own Captain Sheryl Hershey of the West Pittston Corps. Doc Bishop also presented Sister Mc Cauley with a personal donation. Our speaker for today was Assistant Governor John Glaser from Cluster 6. AG John spoke to us about the Polio Rose program for raising money for the Polio eradication effort. John explained that the final push to eradicate Polio, which is still endemic in four countries. Bill and Melinda Gates have made a challenge grant of $100 million to Rotary for the next two Rotary years. They will match every dollar Rotarians pledge to Polio Plus up to the $100 million. The intent is to not tax Rotarians with the burden of donating the entire amount, but, have the community help. This is where the Polio Roses come in, we sell them to the public and the profits go to Polio Plus. We will be selling the boxes of chocolate roses made by Gertrude Hawk Candy for $2.00 less than they are in the retail stores.

January 2, 2008 - members Doc Bishop, Marty, Dan Bishop, Ken Darby and former member Leo Davison met for lunch at Bo Brothers in Forty Fort. There was much reminiscing and frivolity including a picture or two with Marty's dreadlocks that he just couldn't leave St.
Thomas without.

August 14 - Our speaker was Tom Grace, "Voice of the Penguins". Tom brought along Nicole Krutz, Manager of Ticket sales for the Penguins. Tom's talk about the Penguins and his job was very interesting and we found out he loves job. No surprise there because it shows as it always does when someone loves what they do. We also had as our guest Sister Anne Marie McCauley from the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen. We presented Sister our check for $1,000 from our "Score a Goal Against Hunger" project and another $1,000 from Doc. Sister was very grateful to the Rotary Club of Pittston, Doc and the Penguin organization. We are also grateful to the Penguin organization because without them the Score a Goal Against Hunger project wouldn't be possible. Nicole helps us with the ticket availability and the Penguin organization really goes all out to help us make the project a huge success each year. This coming April 5th will be our fourth year with the project and every year it gets better and better from the standpoint of food collected, tickets sold and money collected at the door.
Also President Marty reported to the club that Barbara arrived home safe and sound.
Thursday is set up night for the Pittston Tomato Festival "Bingo". We will be operating the Bingo Friday, Saturday and Sunday and hope for another successful fund raiser this year.

August 7 - Today was our District Governor's Official Visit to our club. We also inducted our newest member, Captain Tracy Keats. Tracy is the Commanding Officer of the West Pittston Salvation Army Corps. The District Governor performed the induction, Doc Bishop pinned the Rotary wheel on Tracy and President Marty gave Tracy her black marble and presented her with her "Enthusiasm" plaque. Tracy stated she was glad to be a member of the Pittston club because we were a fun bunch. I wonder where she heard that!
During "Happy Thoughts" Doc told us he would be glad when next week rolls around. When quizzed about why, he said Bob Shaw would be back and he wouldn't have to be Minister anymore and Dan would be back and he wouldn't have to lead the singing which he claims he isn't very good at. We know how good Dan is though and we will be happy to see him. Doc didn't say but I wonder how good a Minister he is? Dan will be back for a few weeks and then back to the old grindstone he goes.
The District Governor's talk centered around this years theme of "Rotary Shares". He received a hearty round of applause following his well prepared speech. After the infamous "Presidents Minute" we all headed for the barn until next Tuesday.

July 31 - Today was Barbara's last meeting with the club. She will return to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gras,l Brazil on Monday August 6th. We had a nice cake for Barbara with Bon Voyage in Portuguese on it. There were a lot of sad faces and a few tears as well, we will certainly miss her! President Marty presented her with a Rotary International banner from Salt Lake City to give to her Dad who is now a Rotarian. He told us during his visit it is because of us that he decided to join Rotary. As if we needed any further reward for hosting Barbara! She was a reward herself. A special thanks to Grace Planck, Bob Shaw, the Costello's and Passarella's for the outstanding jobs they did as host families. Maybe Barbara made such a good impression on the Costello's and Passarella's that they too will become Rotarians. Well we can hope!

August 6 - Today President Marty and our new Sheriff (sergeant at arms) Jim Lewis had the pleasure of bidding Barbara adieu at the airport. We thought we would be putting her on a plane but the plane was delayed and a limo service took her to JFK so she wouldn't miss her connection in Miami. Marty received an e-mail from Barbara informing him of her safe arrival in Belo Horizonte, however, when she got to JFK there were more delays and they put her on a direct flight to Sao Paulo from JFK. She arrived home on the flight she was supposed to catch but by a circuitous route. The important thing is she arrived home safe and sound! .

On June 29, 2007 our Installation Dinner was held at East Mountain Inn. It was a small group of Pittston Rotarians in attendance but we all had a good time. Past District Governor's Tom and Melanie Tek-Visgilio were in attendance as well as District Governor Elect Paul Muczynski, Assistant Governor Art Peoples and his wife Sandy who is our District Public Image Chair. We almost had more visitors than us.
PDG Melanie installed the officers and president Marty for his fourth time as president.
President Marty presented Doc Bishop with his pin for the seventh Paul Harris Fellow award.

On June 15th thru the 21st president Marty and Lee attended the Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City. The convention was held in the Salt Palace. The events were nothing short of spectacular. There was great entertainment Saturday night.
On Sunday morning we went to our third Northland breakfast and afterwards attended a stellar performance of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, a highlight of the trip for sure.
On Monday evening we attended a Host Hospitality Night at Heber Valley. Heber Valley is in the mountains about an hours bus ride from the Salt Palace. There were many events to keep us occupied, such as a stage coach ride, knife and tomahawk throwing, Olympic shooting and a few other things that I can't remember. One thing I do remember is the tomahawk throwing since I got a bulls eye on the first attempt. After that I decided I couldn't do anything to better that and relinquished the tomahawk to the next Rotarian. After all the fun we had a barbeque which was just delicious. Steak on the grille and all the rest that goes with the steak or hot dogs and hamburgers if you wanted them. Also on the same Host Hospitality trip was Ivan Vianna from Brazil. Ivan is our Barbara's Brazilian counselor. Ivan had his daughter-in-law Claudia with him. Ivan's son is attending college here in the states and Claudia is here with his son. We all had a great time. We exchanged banners with the Rotary Club of Heber Valley.
Tuesday took us to the Great Salt Lake and the Kennecott Copper Mine. The Kennecott Copper Mine is the largest excavation by man on earth. It is one of only two man made objects visible from outer space. The other of course being the Great Wall of China.

Wednesday was the closing of the convention and Lee and I went shopping.
Thursday we were journeying home and all went pretty well until we landed at Avoca and one of our bags didn't make it with us. Wouldn't you know that was the one with my shaving kit! I was all prepared for one of those blade shaves the next morning when they delivered my bag. Thank heavens!
Our Tuesday June 5th meeting was very special. Barbara's Mother and Father paid us a visit from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gras, Brazil. As special as it was the meeting was made even more special when Barbara's Dad informed us he had become a Rotarian. He claims, according to Barbara's interpretation anyway, it is my fault. I have been blamed for a lot of things in my life and most if not all were things didn't want to be blamed for. This is something I am proud to take the blame for! Somehow I don't think it was all my blame, the club is just as much at fault, if not more than I. I am sure her host parents, Grace and Bob Shaw have much more to take blame for than me. Anyway it made my day and as a matter of fact my week. .Click Here to View the Gallery
On Sunday, June 10th Barbara and her parents will be going to the NASCAR race at Pocono with me. I hope they like our kind of racing! I will give an update on the race next week.
Our May 15, 2007 meeting was a special birthday celebration for our Barbara who turned 18 on the following day. In addition to a nicely decorated table complete with party hats and noisemakers we had a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey which was enjoyed by all, including our waitress Kristine. The decorations and cake was thanks to Grace who did a masterful job, thank you Grace! No one accurately pinned the tail on, Bob Shaw was the closest and the birthday girl Barbara and president Marty were the farthest away. It was a good time had by all! .Click Here to View the Gallery
Our speaker for the day was Mark Santayana from PA One Call who did a great job of explaining the procedure to follow when digging to prevent hitting utility lines.
Because of all our tom foolery with the donkey tail pinning there was no Presidents Minute today, which was a disappointment to all. Mark Santayana left shaking his head in disbelief.

On April 10, 2007 Meeting Today we were visited by Antosia, a Rotary New Generations Exchange Student and is a member of the Rotaract Club in her district (District 2230). Antosia is from Lublin, Poland and visited North Eastern PA for one month. She is 23 years old and studying to be an attorney in Poland. She was hosted by the Rotary Club of Plains. President Marty and Antosia exchanged banners and Marty presented Antosia with a 110% pin. She is definitely a 110% person! Marty also presented her with an Anthracite Coal souvenir.
.
On April 12, 2007
Marty treated Antosia and Barbara to dinner at Outback and then to the Shrine Circus. Antosia had never been to a circus before and was like a 5 year old (her own words). Both ladies had cotton candy and a front row center seat. The elephants almost touched Barbara who almost turned herself inside out to get back in her seat. After the circus it was off for a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup at Sheets, then to Dairy Queen for a Blizzard. These ladies are "High Maintenance" for sure. But sweet high maintenance!

On April 21, 2007
DGN/AG/President Paul Muczynski and Marty took Antosia to the Philadelphia Airport to begin her journey home. We have no pictures of the two doting fathers making sure this very confidant and intelligent 23 year old didn't miss anything. We did her luggage tags, both inside and out, made sure she got to the correct concourse and security checkpoint and then watched until she was out of sight. She tolerated all this and probably thought we were a little too concerned. She would be right since she is more than capable of taking care of herself. She certainly has left footprints on our hearts which will last forever. We will miss her!

April 24, 2007 - Today our speaker was to be our own Grace Planck. Her Vocational Talk was interrupted by of all things her vocation. She was called to Ohio by the powers that be. Grace will be re-scheduled at a later date. And Doc thought he would finally find out what Grace does. Well Doc you will have to wait a little longer.

On March 27, 2007 the club met at the Ipanema Grille in Scranton. This meeting was our Brazilian Experience hosted by our Rotary Youth Exchange Student Barbara Elisa de Oliveira, who is from Brazil of course. We enjoyed the Brazilian food and decided it wasn't too very different from our own and that if we were stranded in Brazil we would be able to subsist and survive very well!
Doc advised us that we were doing well with the Score a Goal Against Hunger ticket sales and that we only had 26 more to sell. Doc brought the tickets in his briefcase which is setting on the table. He said his office is on an austerity program and that is all he had in the budget for his briefcase. He must be watching too much of the Survivor series!
Marty advised the club that on April 10th we would have a special visitor and would tailor the meeting around her visit. The special visitor is Antonina (Antosia) Zawadzka from Poland. Antosia is a New Generations Exchange student from Lublin, Poland. Antosia will be leaving us and returning home on April 14th. We will miss her!
The informal meeting of the great Rotary Club of Pittston closed as the good doctor rang the glass. "Well done Barbara". Click Here to View the Gallery
"On Wednesday March 21 DGN/President Paul Muczynski and President Marty took Rotary Exchange Student Antonina (Antosia) Zawadzka from Lublin, Poland to Philadelphia for the day. Antosia is here on a New Generations exchange and will be here for one month. Antosia is a Rotaract member in Poland.
Our first stop in Philadelphia was the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania for a tour of the building. After Grand Lodge we visited City Hall and took a Tower Tour to the observation deck just below William Penn's feet. All of the morning's excitement made us hungry for a Philadelphia Cheese steak and where is the best place to get one of these scrumptious sandwiches but the originator of the Philly Cheese steak, Pat's Steaks. Antosia had one Cheezewiz sandwich "wit" and she is now an aficionado of the Philly Cheese steak! From Pat's we ventured to Liberty Center where we toured the Liberty Bell, Pennsylvania State House and Independence Hall. After all of this brain numbing information it was time for a Starbucks and a session of "shooting the bull" for a half hour. We then informed Antosia that a surprise was arranged for her, we would take her to the King Tut exhibit which by a stroke of luck was in Philadelphia. After a circuitous tour of the area around Franklin Institute to locate a parking lot we found one, however the attendant spoke some language none of us had ever heard and we couldn't understand one word he spoke. Antosia and Marty decided that it was the chauffeur's responsibility to park the car according to the attendant's direction. It took Paul a little while to determine he was telling him to park in any empty space and give the last four characters of his license plate. Paul parked in an empty space but apparently the wrong empty space because our attendant asked him to move to another empty space which was more to the attendant's liking. After the King Tut exhibit we had all had enough oh Philly for one day and tried to find our way out of Philadelphia. Eventually our chauffer did find the way out and it was off to Allentown for dinner. (A late dinner) A dinner and some wonderful conversation led us to the conclusion that it was getting late and we had to get Cinderella home before she turned into a pumpkin. We accomplished this goal and today Cinderella has turned back into Antosia." Whew!! That's all Doc!

February 13, 2007 - Today's meeting centered on our third "Score a Goal Against Hunger" project. The project will take place on April 7, 2007 at the Wachovia Arena. The Penguins will play the Phantoms in what will undoubtedly be a slugfest. Tickets are available from any Pittston Rotarian at a cost of $15.50. Profits from the ticket sales will be donated to the St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen. Fans are asked to bring canned goods and other non-perishables to the game. We will distribute these food donations to the Salvation Army Food Banks of Wilkes-Barre, Scranton and West Pittston. The game time is 7:05 pm on April 7, 2007.
The picture to the left is of our penguin and friends... From left to right is: President Marty Snyder, Youth Exchange Student Barbara Oliveira, Cory Mercer and Captain George Mercer, Pittston Rotarian and West Pittston Corps Officer.
February 6, 2007 - The club meeting was held at Perkins Restaurant & Bakery where President Ted handed the reins of the club over to new President Marty. A motion was made by Bob Shaw to raise the meal cost to $10 per meeting, which was seconded by Rich Colwell and carried by the body. Another major decision was made today to move our meeting place from Victoria Inns to Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, 304 Route 315, Pittston, PA effective February 13, 2007. Barbara turned in two applications for host families. A committee of Bob Shaw, Rich Colwell and Marty Snyder will investigate the families and decide which Barbara will reside with next.
January 30, 2007 - The club was visited by the Brazilian Youth Exchange Officer from District 4760, Ivan Vianna. District 4760 is where Barbara comes from. We had more visitors than members with PDG Paul Kerr, PDG Krisanda from New Jersey and their exchange student who is also from Brazil. There were several other guests as well. President Ted announced his resignation as president which was accepted by the club. Marty agreed to fill the remainder of Ted's term. Ted's resignation from the club was not accepted.

On November 18, 2006, Bob Shaw, Our Barbara and Marty rang the bell for the Salvation Army at K-Mart in Pittston Commons.  The two old bucks and a doe are pictured in the photo.  All in all we had a great couple of hours of collection. Everyone seemed to enjoy our adornment or they may have been trying to humor us.  In any event they were generous with the donations. We thank them all for their generosity and their comments and the fact that no one decided to take an early shot before deer season started.
No poachers either!
On November 16, Barbara and I (Marty) made a visit to Philadelphia. We visited the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania for a tour of the Masonic Temple. Next we visited Philadelphia City Hall where we ascended to the tower just below William Penn's feet for a great view of the city.  Next we made a stop at Pat's King of Steaks where the Philadelphia Cheese steak sandwich originated.  We each had a delicious Philadelphia Cheese steak, one wit, one wit out.  The biggest challenge of the day was holding everything in place and still eating our sandwiches.  The wind was pretty gusty but we were fortunate that we had not one drop of rain.  In fact we had not much in the way of rain, except a few nuisance drops whilst at Liberty Center and Independence Hall.  After enjoying our cheese steaks we headed to Independence Center for a trip to view the Liberty Bell and tour Independence Hall.  After a brief visit to the Gift Shop we headed to visit Barbara's friend Archana and family for dinner.  When we exited the parking garage at Liberty Center we were welcomed by a deluge.  It was raining cats and dogs.  We set the navigation system to Archana's address and put our trust in the lady in the dash.  She got us there eventually but the traffic was horrendous.  What should have taken thirty minutes or so took us an hour and a half or more.  We were happy to get a respite from the miserable conditions outside and visit with Archana and her parents.  Archana's father is also a Rotarian.  After dinner and nice conversation we started for home. Again we were glad to have our lady in the dash get us out of there.  On the way home Grace called us and informed us that there had been extensive flooding in the area and her apartment was without power.  We made a stop at Grace's for Barbara's change of clothes and Barbara stayed the night at our home.  All in all it was a long day and we were happy to be home and in a warm dry bed. On October 11 Doc, Rich, Barbara and Marty went to the Penn State-Temple game in Doc's motor home. It started out balmy and beautiful and we strolled to the Creamery for a Peachy Paterno, two Strawberry and one Cookie Dough ice cream cones. Mmmmm-good! After we returned to the motor home it started to rain, in fact it poured cats and dogs. By the time we were to head for our seats the rain had stopped and we thought we dodged a bullet, however as soon as we got to our seats it poured and for most of the game that was the story. Occasionally it stopped and we put our poncho hoods down and a few minutes later we were putting them back up. The hoods gave us an idea what it would be like to have tunnel vision, not a good thing!
Saturday was a lot of firsts for "Our Barbara", First time in a motor home, first college football game, first American hot dog, first Sloppy Joe (Wimpy) and the very important Penn State ice cream from the Creamery. There may have been other firsts but we had such a great time they are forgotten. We enjoyed Barbara's company so much the time just flew by.
On Sunday morning another first for Barbara, a homemade waffle served American style with butter (Well "I can't believe it's not butter" anyway) and syrup. I knew I forgot something, I didn't get a picture. Probably because I was to busy eating one myself. Click Here to View the Gallery
All in all a memorable time that we will treasure! "Well Done" Mr. Bishop!
On October 27 through the 29th some of us went to the District Conference held at Genetti's in Williamsport. There are pictures from conference and the party Saturday and Darth (Marty) Vader.

On October 17th and 18th we completed our fourth year "Dictionary Project". On the 17th Ted, Rich, Barbara and Marty visited the Martin Mattei Middle School where we distributed dictionaries to nine (9) third grade classrooms. After Martin Mattei we attended our regularly scheduled weekly meeting at Victoria Inns. After our meeting we distributed the dictionaries to St. Mary Assumption Parochial School.
On October 18th Rich and Marty distributed the dictionaries at Sacred Heart in Dupont and then Holy Rosary in Duryea." When we got the kids all wound up we gave them back to the teachers for them to try to calm them down. It probably took the rest of the day after Rich got done jacking them up. A great time was had by all with this worthwhile project, all of us Rotarians, in particular! This weekend is our District Conference at Genetti's in Williamsport. Join us for a day if you can't make the whole weekend. Saturday evening is a Halloween costume event so some good pictures should be available next week.

On Columbus Day Barbara and I took an excursion from Scranton to Moscow. The steam locomotive pulling the train was approximately 1920's vintage. The leaves were just starting to turn so we didn't see a lot of Fall Flaming Foliage but it was a good experience. Click the picture to the left to see .
October 17th & 18th are Dictionary Project distribution days.  On the 17th at 9:00 am we will start distribution to the third graders at Martin Mattei Middle School.  Our meeting follows at noon and then we will distribute dictionaries at St. Mary Assumption.  On the 18th at 9:30 am we will be at sacred Heart in Dupont and at 10:30 am Holy Rosary in Duryea.  We expect to distribute over 300 dictionaries.
On September 21st The Rotary Club of Pittston received District Governor Dick Wagener of Rotary District 7410 for his Official Visit to the club at their Past President's Dinner at the East Mountain Inn. District Governor Dick thanked the club for the International and Community involvement they have been part of for the last eighty six years. The more recent activities with fewer members particularly impressed DG Dick. He also informed the club about activities at the international level of Rotary and those regarding the district level. The governor also recognized the international work done by the club with matching grants, Youth Exchange and the Group Study Exchange, two club members being Rotary Foundation Alumni. Amy Colwell as a Team Member to Korea and Marty Snyder as Team Leader to Norway in 2004. Also recognized was our Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Barbara Elisa Oliveira from Belo Horizonte, Brazil who was present at the dinner.
Club President Ted Horn thanked all the past president's present for their contributions of service to the club. Past Presidents in attendance were
Marty Snyder, Bob Shaw, Mike Insalaco, Amy Colwell and Rich Colwell.

Jack Smiles Speaks to Club
On September 12th our speaker was Jack Smiles from the Pittston Dispatch.  He spoke to us about his book Ee-Yah: The Life And Times Of Hughie Jennings, Baseball Hall Of Famer and other major league players from the Pittston Area.  Everyone enjoyed Jack's talk and his good company.  He would make a good Rotarian!
Jack also made arrangements to interview our exchange student Barbara on Wednesday after lunch at Pittston Area High School.  We spoke to Jack about Rotary's Interact Club for high school students and he agreed to help us promote the start of an Interact Club at Pittston Area High School. Sponsoring an Interact Club has been a goal if the Pittston Rotary Club for about ten years or so, it looks like this will be the best opportunity we have had to date.
Our thanks to Jack for his help.

Our Youth Exchange Student!
Our speaker was our lovely Youth Exchange Student Barbara who talked about her home country of Brasil.  She had a very nice DVD which showed the beauty of her homeland.  She also gave us some statistics about her state "Minas Geris" and her city of Belo Horizonte.  Her city was chosen as the city with the best quality of life in all of Latin America and is ranked 45th among the top 100 in the world.  The weather is a pleasant 70°F all year. Barbara also made us a very special dessert.  It is very popular in Brasil but I am not sure what it is called. I can tell you that they were all gone by the end of the meeting.
At our Board Meeting we discussed the upcoming Dictionary Project, Student Speakers, approved Barbara's stipend of $75 the first of each month and approved an ad in the Salvation Army 2006 Annual Community Award Dinner Booklet.  Senator Lemmond and his wife Barbara are being honored.  To me the highlight of the meeting was when I did the banner exchange with Barbara. Click Here to View the Gallery Her sponsor club is the Rotary Club of Betim in District 4760 Brazil.
We Like to Thank the Pittston Area School District for their efforts in Barbara's enrollment.

Bingo a Big Success
Once again the Tomato Festival has come and gone and we have managed to make it through another year of Bingo. Marty, Jim, Doc, Dan and Marty's grandson Stephen all put in IRONMAN hours at the bingo this year and deserve special thanks. This year we saw a 53% increase in net revenue over last year, so we are definality going in the right direction.

Special thanks to Stephanie Degillio (Miss Teen Pa) who came out and spent her free time acting as guest caller for the club. She is a sweetheart and a good sport, and we enjoyed seeing her again before she departs to Penn State. Good luck in school this Fall!

There is a new gallery of pictures from the Bingo added to the Photos Page - Click Here to View the Gallery

Our Youth Exchange Student is Here!
On Tuesday Aug 22nd we all got to meet Barbara Elisa De Oliveira for the first time. Barbara is our exchange student from Brasil and she just arrived in the USA on Sunday. Barbara will be staying with Grace Planck for the first leg of her trip, and then will be staying with Bob and Karen Shaw starting this winter. Barbara speaks and understands english very well, and the club enjoyed getting to know her a little bit. We all should make an effort over the next month or 2 to take Barbara out and show her the area and get to know her on a more personal basis.

Peter Lello Speaks to CLub about LCCC
On Tuesday August 22nd Peter Lello from LCCC (Luzerne County Community College) joined us for lunch. Peter is a long time friend of Bob Shaw, and is the Major Gift/Planned Giving Specialist for the College. Peter spoke about the many issues facing the college in the future, and about the major contributions the college makes to our way of life in northeastern Pa. We all enjoyed getting to know Peter and hope he becomes a regular visitor at the club.

If you can help the college in some way, feel free to contact Peter at his e-mail - plello@luzerne.edu or visit the LCCC website at www.luzerne.edu

Jim Lewis elected Chairman of Fundraising
At the prodding (and nomination) of Dan, we elected Jim Lewis to be in charge of fundraising for the club. Over the course of the bingo, we all got to exchange ideas about fundraising for the club with Jim, and it was fairly clear he has some fresh ideas - and very clear he has the most experience. The club looks forward to hearing what Jim has in mind. Jim's ideas may take a bit of time and effort to get off the ground, but once we have things set up and in place, the load will lighten and the revenues will increase. Just keep in mind the long term goals of making the club more financially sound and increasing our ability to serve our community.
Dan's Last Meeting on 8/22
Our August 22nd meeting was a sad day for me personally, as i attended my last meeting until December when I return for Christmas break. I am grateful for the good wishes and support of the club as I travel to Grand Cayman Island. For the past 2+ years it has been my pleasure and priviledge to get to know all the club members and work side by side to make our little corner of the world a bit better. You've all become my mentors and friends, and I look forward to December when I get to see you all again.

Corn Roast a Great Day
On 8/12 we held our annual Corn Roast at Doc's house - And this year were joined by the Harding Church of Christ for the party. The day also served as a going away party for Dan who will be flying off to veterinary school on 8/25. The weather was beautiful and everyone enjoyed the fellowship and food. The rumor is that Doc managed to get the best sweet corn in the state. Dan wants to extend his thanks to all that attended and shared the day with him - And to say how much he will miss all his friends in Rotary and the church.

The day was also a special day - As we inducted a new member into the family of Rotary. Grace Planck was inducted into Rotary at the picnic. Grace visited the club a few weeks ago - and we managed not to scare her away. We are very pleased that Grace has decided to join us, and look forward to many years of getting to know her. We also need to thank Grace for saving our bacon - She will be taking our exchange student for the first few months. For those of you that have yet to meet Grace, she will be attending the Bingo, so come out and get to know her.

Kent Tompkins Speaks to Club
On 8/08 we were joined by Ted's friend Kent Tompkins from Homesteaders Life Company to speak to us about the pre-planning of funerals. Kent gave us a lot of useful information about the advantages of pre-planning and pre-payment. As Kent put it, their job is to try and make a family's worst day a bit easier. We all enjoyed Kent visiting with us and hope he joins us for lunch again in the future. You can visit their website at www.homesteaderslife.com
Blood Screening Date Set
The blood screening date has been set - We will be running it at the Wyoming Area High School from 6 am to 10 am on Oct 21st. We will need a few people to arrive that morning at 5 am to help set up the room and the refreshments for the people that come to be tested. This is a great event that really helps the elderly members of our community - So come and help us make this a great event.
Robin Williams speaks to Club
On 8/01 we were joined for lunch by Robin Williams, owner of a lifestyle management company called Time-Masters. Robin visited with us through lunch, and then spoke to us about the errand, personal assistant and property management services her company provides. Robin had a lot of interesting things to say and we all enjoyed her company. You can visit her website at www.timemastersnepa.com to get more details about the services they provide.
Exchange Student Arriving on 8/21
Marty informs us that our exchange student from Brazil will be arriving in the USA on 8/20. She will be staying her first night with another exchange student, and Marty will be picking her up on Monday. From there he will be taking her to Grace Planck's home for her firwst 1/3rd of her stay. After that Bob and Karen will be keeping her. We still need at least one more host family, so keep your eye out for qualified hosts.

Sister Ann McCawley Visits Club
On July 25th, we were joined by Sister Ann McCawley of the St Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. We presented Ann with a check from the 'Score a Goal' project from this spring. Sister Ann expressed her gratitude for the help, and briefly spoke about the soup kitchen looking into expanding their help and adding an evening meal. It's always a pleasure to have Sister Ann join us and we look forward to helping as often as we can - and they need the help!
Pittston Rotary Loses Another Member
It is with a sad heart that I must report the news that Leo Davison has resigned from the club and that we have accepted his resignation. Leo has been an active and hard working member - and a good friend -- for many years. He and Barbara will certainly be missed personally and professionally by the club. Each one of us extends their best wishes for Leo and Barbara in the future and hope that someday they can return to the family of Rotary.
Halloween Party Date Change
After talking with Wyoming, the date of the Halloween Party has been changed from 10/19 to 10/26. Please make sure to mark your calendars and come out for an evening of fun and fellowship with our friends from Wyoming.
Rotary Raffle Fundraiser
We will again be running our raffle of Penn State Tickets. The date of the game is Oct 14th and could be the Big 10 game of the year -- Penn State vs. Michigan. It is a nationally televised evening game so the stadium should be wild. Plan on selling as many tickets as we can to friends and visitors at the Bingo.
