Installation Dinner an Evening of Fun and Frolic
On Thursday June 29th we held our annual installation dinner at the East Mountain Inn - and it was a night to remember. We arrived and spent about an hour on the deck enjoying the nice weather and fellowship. At 7 we started dinner and the food was great. After dinner was when the fun began. First on the agenda was honoring Charlie Buffalino for his 50 YEARS of service to the Pittston Rotary. Charlie spoke briefly to the club about his memories of the Pittston Rotary and he and his wife were enjoyed by all that attended. After Charlie spoke, Marty has the pleasure of presenting Mark Klinges (Junior) with a Paul Harris. We then installed all the officers (except for president) for the 06 - 07 year. Finally it was time for the coronation of our 'His Emminance' Ted Horn. Ted was outfitted in his kingly attire and entered the great hall with Janice covering his path with rose petals. Ted took his oath, and made promises to the club including snow shoveling and not taking apart any more computers. Ted was knighted and annointed with olive oil, and given his new crown. We ended the evening with Ted speaking about his plans for the upcoming year.

There is a full gallery of photos from the evening, and most of them are a riot to see - Click Here to See the Full Gallery!

Marty Returns from Oslo
Marty returned from Oslo the last week of June and wanted to share some of his pictures and thoughts from the trip. There is a short essay and a bunch of pics in the photo area. If you look carefully, you might see a former GSE team member we all know.

President 'Crusher' bids the Club his Farewell
On June 6th, Marty said his farewell to the club as President. It has been a great 2 years with Marty at the helm, and we accomplished a lot - and had a lot of fun doing it. Meeting won't be the same without our 12 sign up sheets and president's minute, but we'll all have to carry on. The club wishes to thank Marty for his tireless work and dedication to the club - We always knew what we were supposed to do and when to do it because of Marty's hard work and organization. Ted will have big shoes to fill for his upcoming year!

On Tuesday May 23rd, our good friend Melissa Jones from the Pittston Library came to join us for lunch. Melissa filled us in on the inside scoop of the several break ins that happened at the library. She also spoke to us about the children's summer reading program for this year, and the many other activities that library runs. Melissa is a great asset to the local community and we're always happy to have her visit. Keep up the great work Melissa.

Melanie Tek Presents Marty the President's Citation
On Tuesday May 23rd we were also joined for lunch by DG Melanie Tek. It's always a joy to have Melanie visit with us. This visit was especially nice as she was there to present Marty with the President's Citation for our work in the past year.

GSE Team Photos Added to Photo Album and Downloads Page
I have added my photos and some from Marty of the GSE teams visit to the photo page. GSE Exchange a GREAT SUCCESS - and Great Fun for all involved
It was a busy week, but worth the time and effort to have the GSE Team in our cluster. We all have great stories about the team, and lots of memories that will make us laugh and smile for many years to come. We all had a great time getting to know the team and showing them a little slice of american life. We all hope they enjoyed their time here as much as we enjoyed having them.

Special Thanks for the GSE Team Help
There were many members of our club, members of other clubs in the cluster, and local friends that deserve special thanks.

First off, we want to thank the host families. In our club, Leo and Barbara Davison kept Yazctik Guevara and Dan & Tree Bishop kept Edgardo (Chacho) Figueroa and Flor Vela. President Paul Muczynski from the Plains Rotary kept Luigi Chung, and Frank Mattei from the Plains Club kept team leader Heber Espejo. Thanks to all for their tireless work and opening their homes to our Peruvian guests.

We also want to thank the Dallas Rotary Club for sending us a contribution for the GSE Dinner on Monday evening. All the members of the Pittston Club express their thanks to Dallas for their help and support.

We also need to thank those that participated in 'Vocational Day.'

Special thanks to the 3 lovely ladies at Tenenbaum's Travel that giggled the day away with Luigi - It's always the quiet ones that you have to watch out for!

Special Thanks to Brad Elison from the Pa Bureau of Forestry - Brad took a good chuck of his day to drive to Doc's house in Harding and spent a lot of time talking to Flor about much of the conservation work the state does. Brad stayed for lunch and we enjoyed his company and all had questions about his work. Even though Brad is a Mountaineer, we'll consider him an 'Honorary Nittany Lion' for his 'above and beyond the call of duty' help with Flor.

Special Thanks to the Plains and Wilkes-Barre Fire Departments for showing Chacho around and letting him get some hands on time with some of their favorite rescue tools. Also special thanks to Paul Muczynski for arranging a great vocational day for Chacho on short notice. Chacho came home and said -- 'I LOVE Fire trucks' - Clearly he enjoyed himself.

Special Thanks to Geisinger Hospital for letting Yazctik spend the day there seeing the american medical system in operation. We appreciate them taking the time to show Yazctik and answer all his questions.

Special Thanks also need to go to Marty Snyder and Christine Slacktish for taking the team to Philadelphia all day. They had a great time - especially with the shopping - And this time they managed to get there and back without losing anyone. We also want to thank Marty and Paul for giving up their Saturday evening (and a race night) to take the GSE team to the Woodlands. The team all decided it was a 'great american disco'.

Finally - More special thanks go to Marty Snyder for keeping everyone organized about where to go and what to do. As always, Marty took the time and effort to make a schedule, make sure we all had it - and most important, make sure we all actually followed it.

GSE Team Leaves our Cluster
On 5/18, Marty and Dan took the GSE team to their next cluster. We were sad to see them go, but know they have a lot more to do and see with the other clubs in the district. We took the five members of the team to the Elmhurst Country Club where we met Mary Ellen Bentler for lunch. After having a nice lunch overlooking the golf course, we switched their gear and said our goodbyes. We all had a great time with the GES Team and made friends and memories we will cherish.

Student Speaker Crowned Miss Pennsylvania's National Teenager 2006
On May 2nd, Bob Shaw received an E-mail from Stephanie Degillio letting us know that she has been crowned Miss Pennsylvania's National Teenager 2006. Stephanie spoke to the club in March about her many activities and interests. Stephanie will spend the next year traveling to represent her title at charities and service organizations. The club extends it's congratulations to Stephanie and look forward regular reports of her activities. Maybe we can get her to make an appearance as guest caller for the Rotary Bingo.

Score a Goal a Great Success!
On Saturday April 8th we held our second annual 'Score a Goal Against Hunger' project at the Wachovia Arena with the Penguins. Although the weather was cold and windy, the project was a great success. The final numbers aren't in yet, but we believe we have collected about $1800 in total and I estimate there are over 1000 cans/packages of food. We made big strides this year and can look to the future for even more success! Each member should be proud of the hard work they put it - and should know the work has paid off to help the hungry in the area.

Special Thanks for the 'Score a Goal Against Hunger' Project
Many people helped and participated in the project this year, but there are a few people that deserve special recognition for their outstanding service.

First and foremost, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the Times Leader & Susan Kahlau. The Times Leader gave up thousands of dollars in advertising revenue to place large and prominent free ads for the project in the paper. Their assistance brought attention to the project and made it possible for us to help more people. We're happy to see their commitment to the community and appreciate their help.

Noreen Clark & WNEP-16 deserve a special thank you for their outstanding support of the project. For those of you that missed it, Noreen took a full minute from her weather forecast on Saturday morning to talk about the project and implore people to bring food and cash donations to the game. Because of her broadcast, we took the time to prepare cans for collecting cash donations and it made a huge difference in the amount of money we collected. We thank Noreen for the help and support, and hope we can get her to come and visit the club in the future.

Our good friend Joyce Salvo from the Pittston Area School District has again come through for us and gathered 4 students from the Pittston Area High School to assist us in the food and cash collections. Although we have yet to twist Joyce's arm into joining the club, she has been doing club work as if she was a member. We are pleased to call her a friend of the club and thank her for her service to her students and the community. She is a huge part of educating our future leaders and earns 'jewels in her crown' each and every day.

We also want to thank the 4 students that gave up a Saturday evening to help us. The weather was cold and windy, but they toughed it out to be a part of this project. The 4 of them were perfect examples of what 'Service Above Self' means and will spend their lives making a difference for others. We are proud to have Alexander Noll, Santino Ardo, Erin Donahue and Alexander Caicedo associated with the club. They came and worked hard and never complained - And most important, they took joy in being a part of helping others. Our door is always open to our 4 new student friends.

Jim Lewis deserves our special thanks - Jim took the time to have his own mini food drive at his business and came through with 4 boxes of food. Jim isn't just a Rotarian at meetings - Jim lives as a Rotarian 24/7 - and we're lucky to have him in our ranks.

Finally, we need to thank Nicole and the Penguins Organization -- Without their support this project couldn't happen. They were much more involved this year with the project and have gone the extra yard to help us. We're happy to see them so involved in the community and proud to be associated with them. We look forward to working with them for years to come.

Ivan Ivanna Speaks to the Club on Rotary Youth Exchange
On 3/14 we also had Ivan Ivanna from the Belo Horizante Rotary Club speak to us about Youth Exchange. Ivan is a former Youth Exchange student from 40 years ago, so he has a great understanding of the many benefits of youth exchange. Ivan gave a great powerpoint presentation about the history and entire process of how Youth Exchange works. The club enjoyed hearing from Ivan and wish he and his club the best as they continue their hard work.

Joining us was -- PDG Paul Kerr, Tom Kurosky, Ivan Vianna, Ted Krisanda from District 7470, Joe Lochman and Barbara Schupeltz. It's always a joy for us to have visitors and enjoy the fellowship of the family of Rotary. Our door is always open to our guests and we hope they find the time to visit with us again.

Sister Ann McCawley from St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen Speaks to the club
It was a perfect time for Ann to visit us from the Soup Kitchen as we gear up for our 'Score a Goal Against Hunger' project. Ann spoke to us briefly about the kitchen and how it has been serving meals for over 24 years. At present, they feed over 400 people per day and the time of greatest need is now. After speaking, Doc presented her with a $500 check for the many needs at the kitchen. Ann was very grateful for the donation and thanked Doc and the club for their continued support.
Times Leader & Susan Kahlau Provides Great Support to the Score a Goal Against Hunger Project
Last week Marty received an E-Mail from Susan Kahlau of the Times Leader. They are going to run ads for us beginning in March to advertise our Score a Goal Against Hunger project. They will be running 6 insertions both daily and on Sunday. Needless to say we owe both Susan and the Times Leader a great deal of thanks and support. It's great to see them take the time, effort and money to support our goal of feeding the hungry. That kind of community spirit is what a hometown newspaper is all about.

Don Fipps Speaks to the Club
On 2/21 we were joined by Don Fipps, formerly of the American Red Cross. Don joined us for lunch, and then spoke about many of the issues and problems facing the Red Cross. He spoke at length of how the Red Cross is going through institutional wide changes to compete in the market and continue to supply much needed blood to hospitals all around the region and US. We were sad to discover that Don will be leaving the area for a new position, but our loss is another area's gain. The club extends it's best wishes to Don in the future.

Student Speaker wow's the club
This week we were pleased to welcome Alyssa Getz as our student speaker. Alyssa is a Senior at Pittston Area High School, is a cheerleader, and currently serves as Key Club President. Alyssa spoke to us about some of the projects that Key Club is involved with, including collecting can tabs for dialysis for the needy, movie nights for the local children, organizing homecoming weekend and their adopt a highway program. She also expressed her dismay that at times it seems that very few of her contemporaries share her love of service to others. The club was pleased to to have Alyssa and wish her good luck in Stroudsburg next year. We hope she will join us for lunch again on her summer vacations from college.

Doc, Dan & Marty visit the Wyoming Rotary Club
On Feb. 16th, Dan, Marty and Doc joined the Wyoming Rotary Club for their Valentine party at the Checkerboard Inn.

When we arrived, Dan discovered that the new member to be inducted that evening was John Morris, a classmate of his from Wyoming Seminary. Dan and the Pittston Club welcome John to the family of Rotary, and look forward to him doing good work for them.

Doc spoke to the club about the 'Score a Goal Against Hunger' project that we are running, and their members seemed very impressed with the project. There was also quite a bit of interest in ticket sales, so we hope they can help us out and join us for a fun evening out. Doc also got the biggest laugh of the evening with his blonde joke. You'll have to ask him to repeat it on Tuesday for those that didn't hear it.

FInally, Dan spoke to the membership and their wives about having a web site for the club. He gave them an overview of what is involved, how the process works, and some of the features that they might find useful. The club seemed very receptive to Dan's ideas and seemed to enjoy his talk. Mark Sobeck had some very kind words about our site and and recommended building their own site to the board on the spot.

PDG Bill Biniek Speaks about Rotary Foundation
We were pleased to have Bill Biniek join us for lunch on 2/07. Bill is a member of the Rotary Club of Plains, and is a PDG. Bill currently serves as Foundation Chair for our District, and came to speak to us about Rotary Foundation. Bill gave us a lot of info about the inner workings of Foundation, and showed us in real numbers how our Foundation money comes back to the District for spending in the local community. We thank Bill for taking the time to speak to us, and our door is always open for a visit.

Bob Kopec Speaks about the District Blood Drive
On 1/17 we were pleased to welcome Bob Kopec from the Kingston Rotary Club. Bob was the initial spark that gave rise to the district blood drive and has done a great job getting things rolling for the first year of the project. Bob spent a lot of time giving the club ideas on how to get family, friends and co-workers to donate blood to the Red Cross. It was great to have Bob join us and we all came away with fresh ideas on how to make this project a success. Kudos to Bob for his hard work and dedication -- and for taking the time to come and speak to us.

Student Speaker Alex Knoll and Joyce Salvo
On 1/10/06 we were joined by student speaker Alex Knoll and Joyce Salvo from the Pittston Area High School. Alex is a member of the Pittston Area football team and the National Honors Society. In spite of suffering through a tough season on the football field, Alex talked about the experience of being part of a team and assuming the role of one of the team leaders. It was clear that the teams failure on the field was still a positive learning experience for Alex and the rest of the team. Alex plans to attend college in Florida after high school to be close to family. The club enjoyed meeting Alex and sends him our best wishes.

Rotary Shopping Page Launched
Many of you may have noticed that the web site didn't get updated last week - Because we spent the time getting up a basic version of the Rotary Shopping section of the web site. The area still needs a LOT of work, and we are still getting approvals (and rejections) from vendors in every niche. Today I had to add 9 new sites -- and more come in - almost 24/7. There are HUNDREDS of web sites to choose from, so take a few minutes to click around.

The burden is now on us to do three things --
1) Market
2) Network
3) Add sites and programs

Market
The best thing we can all do is bookmark that page and begin to do any shopping we can through the shopping area. Tell your friends and family about it and ASK for their help. Explain to them that ALL shopping on the web is done through a partner program like we are running -- So anything they buy is paying a commission to someone - So they might as well help their community with their spending. I am in the process of writing a press release for the district newsletter but it will not appear till at least January. Marty will be bringing it up at the Council of Presidents, and we should discuss it with any other club members we contact.

Network
This may be the MOST valuable thing we do. Many of these programs are 2 tiered - What that means is that if we sign up an organization to a partner program - We get up to an additional 5% of the sales THEY generate. They get their standard cut, and we get 5% from the processing company. If we help other clubs, libraries, service organizations and business construct and market their web site., everyone does better -- their organization, our club and Foundation. It's a win/win for everyone involved. We should market the idea to other clubs and organizations for their own use.

Add Sites
This is a way to have input into the shopping area and tailor it to fit your shopping needs. If there is a site you use that is not listed, you should tell me so I can check if they have a partner program. If they do, I can sign up the club and put a link in the shopping area you can use. Those of you that shop online on a regular basis can send me a list of sites you shop and I can work through them. The more you can tell me, the more useful the site will be to you.

Carmen Mauriello speaks on 12/27
On 12/27 we were joined by Carmen Mauriello from the Peace Corps. Carmen has been working in Mozambique for the past year teaching at a secondary school. He has been in contact with his local Rotary club and has been a part of setting up the first Rotaract club at the school. Carmen spent some time talking about the problems in Mozambique, and showed us some pictures of the Rotaract clubs first project, a clothing drive. Carmen will be returning to Mozambique for another year and is hoping to get a 'matching grant' project going to help kids afford to go on to college. The club members present were all impressed with Carmen and hope we can assist him in his work. Anyone that would like to contact Carmen can write to him directly at carmen_mauriello@yahoo.com

Polio and Rotary News
I found this article on one of the Philly club web sites and thought you might like to read it.

POLIO AND ROTARY - April 12, 2005 Editorial from The Wall Street Journal
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Salk polio vaccine. Poliomyelitis, also known as infantile paralysis, used to be one of childhood’s most feared diseases. A few years after Dr. Jonas Salk announced his vaccine on April 12 1955, nearly every child in the U.S. was protected. Today polio has disappeared from the Americas, Europe and the Western Pacific and is nearly gone from the rest of the world. A too-little known part of this feat is the role played by Rotary, the international businessman’s club, which 20 years ago adopted the goal of wiping out the disease. Rotary understood that medical breakthroughs are worthless unless people aren’t afraid to immunize their children and efficient delivery systems exist to get the vaccine to them. And so it mobilized its members in 30,100 clubs in 166 countries to make it happen. In 1985, when Rotary launched its eradication program, there were an estimated 350,000 new cases of polio in 125 countries. Last year, 1,263 cases were reported. More than one million Rotary members have volunteered their time or donated money to immunize two billion children in 122 countries. In 1988, Rotary money and its example were the catalyst for a global eradication drive joined by the World Health Organization, Unicef and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. In 2000 Rotary teamed up with the United Nations Foundation to raise $100 million in private money for the program. By the time the world is certified as polio-free – probably in 2008 – Rotary will have contributed $600 million to its eradication effort. An economist of our acquaintance calls Rotary’s effort the most successful private healthcare initiative ever. A vaccine-company CEO recently volunteered to us that the work of Rotary and the Gates Foundation, both private groups, has been more effective than any government in promoting vaccines to save lives. It’s become fashionable in some quarters to deride civic volunteerism, but Rotary’s unsung polio effort deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

Rotary Welcomes New Member at Annual Christmas Party
Our annual Christmas party was held on 12/15 at the East Mountain Inn. Although it was terrible weather, most of the members braved the roads to attend. After dinner, Marty presented Doc and Dan the 110% Rotary Pin, and Doc was honored for his year as president. To conclude the evening, Stan Waleski was inducted as a new member and spoke briefly about his contact with Rotary and what the Dictionary Project has meant to the school and children. Dictionary Program Fun For ALL
On 10/25 - 26 we completed the dictionary program for this year. We delivered dictionaries to every third grade student from Pittston Area (Martin Mattei), St. Mary Assumption, Sacred Heart & Holy Rosary. The kids all enjoyed us breaking up their day, and enjoyed the dictionaries.

We were joined on both days by Melissa Szafran Jones from the Pittston Library. She was great with the kids -- and they were impressed with her frog kissing and worm eating stories. I'm sure she motivated a lot of kids to join the summer reading program. We were glad to have her along, and the club expresses it's gratitude.

Rich gets the award for stealing the show -- He had the kids so fired up that Marty and I thought we might need the hook to get him offstage. I'm sure the students and teachers at Holy Rosary will remember Rich a long time.

We all had a great time -- and each one of us has a story to tell that made us laugh and enjoy the kids. We waited outside of one classroom -- The class was just returning from band practice. As they filed past and into the classroom, one bright young man said in a matter of fact way -- So what's the deal with these 'so called' dictionaries. We all laughed -- I regret we didn't get his name, because I suspect his thank you letter would be equally enjoyable.

It's always nice to meet young adults that have already begun to live lives in 'service above self.' The club will always have an open door for these two young ladies, and we invite them to join us in any of our projects that interest them.

Librarian Kisses Frog to Get Kids to Read
Doc recently received this photo of our favorite frog kissing Librarian, Melissa Szafran Jones from the Pittston Library. While she may not have gotten a prince from kissing this frog, she did motivate a large group of children to read and learn in the library's summer reading program. Melissa was a member of Marty's GSE and we are proud to call her a friend of the club. Kudos to Melissa for her innovative work at the library!

Natalie Woronochuk from Northeast Regional Cancer Institute visits club.
On 10/04 we were pleased to welcome Natalie Woronochuk from the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute. The Institute is a non-profit community based agency working to ease the burden of cancer in Northeastern Pa. Natalie spoke briefly about the many research, educational and survivorship projects the Institute runs and it was a joy to spend some time with her. Natalie provided all of us with a large packet of information about their projects and the importance of regular testing and early detection. You can find out more information about the Institute on their web site at http://www.cancernepa.org. I have also added their complete contact information to the Rotary Links Page.

Several of the members also talked with Natalie about the possibility of getting the Institute involved with our blood screening project. We should all think of ways we can partner together on this project and provide more help and information to the community.

On 8/23/05 we welcomed Frank Bartoli, Executive Director of the Greater Pittston YMCA. Frank visited with us for lunch and then spoke about the MANY programs the YMCA runs. I think everyone was impressed with the professionalism of the activities at the YMCA -- especially the great service they provide to children of the local community that need a helping hand. It's clear from his visit that the YMCA is a well run organization that deserves our and community support. We thank Frank for taking the time to visit with us and look forward to him visiting again.

You can see many of the activities of the YMCA on their web site at this address

Karen Shaw Visits Club
On 8/23/05 we had another special guest join us -- Karen Shaw

Karen has visited the club many times, and has spoke to us about her work at the Victims Resource Center in Wilkes-Barre. We have added a new link and contact information on the links page, and there is a photo of her on the miscellaneous photos from the last time she spoke. It's always a joy to have Bob's better half join us for lunch -- and hope she comes to visit more often. You can visit the Victim's Resource Center web site and see their activities at this address

The club was remiss in not thanking Karen Shaw in person for the use of her PA system for the Bingo at the tomato festival -- So we wanted to correct that here -- Thanks a bunch Karen -- We appreciate the help!
